50 Fun Facts About Toronto: Part 2

We’re back! Hoping you had a chance to read Part 1 of our 50 fun facts about Toronto! If so, what was your favourite fun fact or tidbit you learned? As a Toronto real estate agent, I learn new things about the city on a daily basis and figured it would be a fun way to share some of our learnings! Whether you are a buyer, seller, renter, or investor who is considering buying property in Toronto, these fun facts will be sure to get you pumped about living in Toronto. Without further adieu, here is the conclusion of our 50 Fun Facts about Toronto! 

  1. Did you know that Toronto isn’t all about the arts and sports? There are science components as well–most notably the long-standing Ontario Science Centre where kids of all ages can learn, explore, play, and discover. It opened in 1969 on September 26th when they received a radio signal from over 1.5 billion light-years away, striking a circuit and prompting the raising of a curtain to signify the official opening!
  2. Have you ever wanted to dine indoors with a carousel, street car, and countless vintage antiques and artifacts? Well, look no further than the Old Spaghetti Factory located conveniently on the Esplanade. Visitors can enjoy affordable family food in a fun family environment!
  3. Torontonians know that the end of summer is upon us when we start hearing the jingle “Let’s go to the Ex” signifying the opening of CANADIAN NATIONAL EXHIBITION. This time-honoured tradition brings musical performances, food from around the globe, carnival rides and games, and exhibits to explore. If you have ever dreamed of sampling mustard-flavoured ice cream or watching your favourite band at the outdoor concert venue, Budweiser Stage, while fireworks light up the sky–then be sure not to miss out!
  4. The Toronto Zoo is the largest zoo in the country, housing over 500 species and over 5000 animals on its 700 acres!
  5. Foodies unite! Toronto is home to many food festivals where you can sample new cuisine and purchase packaged deals to try out some of the most delicious restaurants. This summer, why not try Taste of Little Italy (June 16-18) where you can feast on pasta, pizza, and gelato, and listen to live street performances to enhance the ambiance? 
  6. Summerlicious is another event not to be missed! Did you know that over 200 participating restaurants offer a special prix fixe 3-course meal this July 7-23?
  7. For the macabre, Toronto is home to some spooky ghost stories and haunted places, and you can be a part of the dark fun! Toronto offers ghost walks and tours of the paranormal!
  8. Though our basketball motto is We the North–Toronto is located in Southern Ontario and is actually quite far south! More so than 15 of our neighbours to the south’s States!
  9. Toronto was compared to the big apple earning the nicknames Little York and Muddy York in the early years!
  10. Toronto has 43 km of amazing shoreline! You can spend the days walking the paths, biking the trails, or enjoying some of the beaches the city has to offer!
  11. Toronto has 140 neighbourhoods with their own character and feel! Another nickname for the city is “the city of neighbourhoods”! Do you have a favourite?
  12. Toronto is home to the only national urban park in the country called Rouge National Urban Park which offers hiking, camping, and beach-going opportunities!
  13. Toronto offers the city a taste of Hollywood glamour with its yearly film fest, Toronto International Film Festival drawing indie flicks and local and international stars alike!
  14. Speaking of movies, about 25% of Hollywood films were filmed in Toronto locations. You may think you are watching the streets of Manhattan until you catch a glimpse of some of our signature skylines!
  15. Fun fact for baseball fans: Babe Ruth hit his very first home run in Toronto! It was at Hanlan’s Point on the Toronto Islands back in 1914!
  16. Did you know the chain Pizza Pizza was founded in Etobicoke back in 1967? 
  17. Another 1967 factoid, is that was the last year the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup. Talk about a drought for our hockey team!
  18. Toronto has world-class public transit, known as the Toronto Transit Commission, or TTC, it is the second largest public transit system in North America, following only New York!
  19. Toronto’s own Distillery District was once the biggest of the British Empire! It operated for 135 years before its 1990 retirement!
  20. Toronto has its own Walk of Fame! The Hollywood stars are instead Maple Leafs and feature some of the country’s most noteworthy celebrities. Take a stroll and honour the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Pamela Anderson, Dan Aykroyd, The Band, Celine Dion, Drake, Alex Trebek and many more!
  21. There are over 50 outdoor skating rinks open to residents and tourists alike. Nathan Phillips and Harbourfront should be on your winter bucket list!
  22. While you might have taken in a show at Ed Mirvish Theatre, did you know that he was the founder of Honest Ed’s? From 1948-2016 the store stood as a Toronto landmark and active discount store with clever slogans and puns decorating the in and exterior. 
  23. Even Toronto has its dark history– the 1832-34 Cholera outbreak led to hundreds of city deaths who were buried quickly in a mass grave in St. James Cemetery. 
  24. In more recent darkness, Canada’s final hanging happened in the Don Jail back in 1962. Convicted murderers made history as the last of the country’s capital punishment as the criminal code abolished the practice in 1976!
  25. Less dark, but still spooky…the home of the first mayor of the city, William Lyon MacKenzie, is said to be haunted! People report ghost sightings, self-playing piano songs, and an antique printing press springing into action without a human hand at the helm. Come visit the MacKenzie house on Bond Street if you are curious enough to explore the museum. 
  26. The Forbes 2022 ranked Toronto #8 in the list of the top 10 cities to live in around the world!
