Take Your Backyard from Drab to Fab: 5 Tips for Creating an Outdoor Oasis

Take Your Backyard from Drab to Fab: 5 Tips for Creating an Outdoor Oasis

For us, the May long weekend is the first sign that summer is approaching, and we can’t wait for summer BBQs and warm nights on the patio. If your yard needs a face lift, or is just feeling a little blah, these five tips will help you create an outdoor space that is as beautiful as it is functional.

1. Add some Colour

Your backyard is the perfect place to experiment with colours that you may normally shy away from in your home. Get bold with the Mirow Turmeric Lounge set from Article, the Hot Mesh Chair and Lounge Chair or the classic Innit Chair, all sold at Urban Mode and available in dozens of colour combinations.

Not feeling that adventurous yet? Accessorize a neutral patio set with bold accent cushions. The possibilities are pretty much endless at Society6. With so many contributing designers, there’s a pattern and colour palette for everyone.

2. Define the space

Nothing pulls a room together like a great rug. Your outdoor living space is no exception. Skip right past the outdated trellis patterned rugs that seem to be in all the big box stores and check out these beauties from CB2 and West Elm.

3.Get Comfy

Raise your hand if, like us, you’ve held onto some uncomfortable patio furniture a little longer than you care to admit. Make this the summer you finally invest in a set that you love. We love these outdoor couches:

4. Set the Mood

There’s nothin’ like a little mood lighting to set the tone for a warm summer night on the patio. Like everyone else on Pinterest, we love the Edison string light trend, and thanks to their popularity they’re pretty much everywhere. If string lights are your thing, you can get them at Home Depot, Canadian Tire, or Costco. If you’re looking for something a little different, take a look at the indoor/outdoor Lucca Chandelier from Pottery Barn or this gorgeous statement Drum Pendant from Casa Di Luce

5. Don’t forget the Greenery

Add some drama to your yard with over-sized planters and tall leafy fronds. Scale and height are key here. Add a mix of different heights and shapes for a more dynamic design. We love the Seminyak Grey Planters from CB2 and the Cityscape Collection from West Elm
